The first German-type Christmas Market in Britain had its inception in Lincoln on 16th December 1982. The opening ceremony was performed jointly by the Oberburgermeister of Neustadt an der Weinstrasse, the Mayor of Lincoln and the Chairman of Lincoln’s twinning committee.
The Christmas Market is still held every December.
Brayford Pool is probably a remnant of the much larger stretch of water which may have given Lincoln its Celtic name of Lindon..from Lyn, meaning a lake. It is joined on the east by the River Witham and on its west by the Fossdyke...dug by the Romans to connect Lindum with the River Trent at Torksey. With this acess to internal waters, and the sea, Lincoln prospered.
Following an absence, the books are now back on sale in increasingly more outlets throughout Lincolnshire.
They will also be available to buy on-line in due course.
After a period of coming to terms with our loss we feel the time is right to do as Roy hoped we would and re-launch his wonderful books and artwork.
The High Bridge is the point of intersection between Ermine Street and the River Witham, which began life in Roman times as a mere ford. It was later bridged to meet the demands of wheeled traffic.
The arch of the bridge itself is Norman and dates from c1160. It has a 22 foot span. The vault was formerly known as the Murder Hole, but now bears the less sinister name of the Glory Hole. The buildings upon the bridge make the spot quite unique, and were built c1540.
Well known for his paintings and books on Lincolnshire author and artist Roy Fisk lived in Lincoln most of his life.
Sadly he passed away in December 2008 but left the wonderful legacy of his work for the world to enjoy.
